A turtle with a dragon's head, the longgui: a domed shell full of spirals, a scaled neck, claws and a tail of flames, among clouds and waves. It is the same red and yellow medallion as the other four: 206 x 206 stitches, two threads and about 37 by 37 centimetres on 14-count.
This one closes the quartet, and closes it in a circle: dragon, phoenix, qilin and tortoise are the Four Divine Creatures of the Book of Rites, and the last one wears the head of the first. In feng shui the longgui is the creature of support — the mountain to lean on — protection and long life: a good gift for someone starting out. And it is the most solid of the five: the one with the most red and the least background, so stitching only the figure it is also the one that takes longest.
