Machu Picchu with Huayna Picchu rising behind it and the sun coming up over the top, snow-capped mountains on either side and, in the foreground, a llama with its red blanket and tassels. To one side, red flowers; underneath, PERU in big letters between Andean woven diamonds. It is 122 x 149 stitches in 14 colors, about 22 by 27 centimetres on 14-count.
The terraces are the absorbing part: beiges, greys and greens meet there in narrow steps, and it pays to keep the chart close. The rest is large, clean areas — the mountain, the sky, the lettering — and a good deal of the fabric stays bare, so it moves along faster than it looks. A keepsake for anyone who has climbed up there.
