The head of the bald eagle with the flag behind it, and the flag inside it too: the neck feathers are painted with the same reds, whites and blues as the stripes. It is 126 x 126 stitches — square, which is rare in the Collection — and 18 colors, about 23 by 23 centimetres on 14-count.
It is the most demanding piece in this family: no fabric shows anywhere, there are 15,876 stitches, and one in ten has no neighbour of its own colour, so it goes slowly and with the chart close by. And if you want to make it easier, that is what free is for: it carries six different blues, and of those, DMC 3844 and DMC 995 are hard to tell apart. The 3844 appears only 440 times and nearly always on its own, so moving it to the 995 saves you a thread and some hundred and fifty isolated stitches with almost no loss.
