An old-style sampler worked entirely in a single color: two rampant lions at the top, the motto "Virtus in armis" — courage in arms — in Roman capitals, two mounted knights facing each other, and a scrolling border to close.
251 x 321 stitches, so it is one of the large pieces, but with a single thread: not one color change in the whole thing, which is what makes a sampler like this move along once you find the rhythm. Swap the blue for another color and the whole piece changes with it.

The numbers
Size by fabric count
| Count | Stitches/cm | The design | In inches | Fabric to buy * |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 ct | 4.3 | 58.0 x 74.1 cm | 22.8 x 29.2 in | 74 x 90 cm |
| 14 ct | 5.5 | 45.5 x 58.2 cm | 17.9 x 22.9 in | 62 x 74 cm |
| 16 ct | 6.3 | 39.8 x 51.0 cm | 15.7 x 20.1 in | 56 x 67 cm |
| 18 ct | 7.1 | 35.4 x 45.3 cm | 13.9 x 17.8 in | 51 x 61 cm |
| 20 ct | 7.9 | 31.9 x 40.8 cm | 12.6 x 16.1 in | 48 x 57 cm |
| 22 ct | 8.7 | 29.0 x 37.1 cm | 11.4 x 14.6 in | 45 x 53 cm |
* The fabric to buy allows 8 cm on each side for the hoop and the frame. The highlighted row is 14-count, the most common: the pattern has the same number of stitches on every fabric, what changes is how big each one is.
Suggested fabric: white.
The threads
| Thread | Stitches | Of the total | Skeins * |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMC 995 | 26,017 | 100.0 % | 16 |
| 1 threads | 26,017 | 100 % | 16 skeins |
* The skeins are a guide: they assume about 1,700 stitches per skein with two strands on 14-count, rounded up. Finer thread goes further, doubled thread goes less far.
What this one asks of you
All 26,017 stitches are full cross stitch: no half stitches and no backstitch to follow.
It has 526 lone stitches, 2.0 % of the total, and 3 of those have no neighbour of their color at all. The more there are, the more the needle jumps.
